Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) selects Danieli Corus for the reline of Blast Furnace No. 1
“Hoogovens” Cooling & Lining design for Russia’s largest integrated steelmaking plant
Danieli Corus has signed a contract with Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) for the reline of Blast Furnace No. 1 at their Magnitogorsk (Russia) plant. The scope of work includes design, supply, installation supervision, cold and hot commissioning supervision. The reline is scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2018.
Blast Furnace No. 1 is one of the eight furnaces at the Magnitogorsk plant. The relined blast furnace will have a nearly 10 % increased working volume when compared to the existing design. The tuyere zone, bosh and belly will be converted from a cooling system based on cast iron staves to the “Hoogovens” Cooling and Lining design. This cooling and lining design is based on machined copper plate coolers in combination with high conductivity graphite, which is the only design with proven capability of achieving campaign lengths in excess of 20 years regardless of ironmaking process circumstances. As part of this project, the furnace construction will be converted from lintel–supported to freestanding.
MMK is the largest single integrated steel plant in the Russian Federation, located in Magnitogorsk. Ground for this plant was broken in 1929, production of pig iron started in 1932. Currently, MMK’s produces in excess of 12 million tonnes of steel annually.
